Beginner Hooping: a self teaching tutorial list.

For the vast majority of my hooping journey I have been self taught. It's a route many hoopers go down, as classes can be few and far between. Whilst it is becoming more and more popular as a form of fitness; there is still a long way to go before we see hooping classes offered in every gym and studio in the country. Many areas of the UK are practically hooping black spots.

Online tutorials are incredibly important to the self taught hooper and Hoop-Trix offers a huge number of hooping tutorials of varying quality. The issue lies, as a beginner, in knowing where to start, what to learn and in what order. In some regards I am still figuring this out now that I am teaching my own classes. Especially considering I self taught in the most random order.

In these few short weeks of teaching, however, I have started to put together a syllabus that works for beginner hoopers. Working from this syllabus I have compiled a list of tutorials for you to follow as you start out on your journey. I have primarily included moves I consider to be the building blocks of hooping - the basics which will set you up for all other moves to come.

Beginner hooping:
  1. Waist hooping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1yEc_-J3aQ
  2. Stalls: turning with the hoop and against the hoop both covered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNqwon6laKQ
  3. Reverse current: changing directions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Phn62VczM&feature=em-uploademail
  4. Walking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdaLmKW23AE
  5. Kneeling and sitting: tutorial is not specific to kneeling or sitting as I teach it, but the tips may be helpful. Essentially you are simply coming down to your knees and hooping and then sitting on your feet and hooping - it's usually just a matter of the hooping speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycehijQbKdQ
  6. Neck hooping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkb1AZJTj3o
  7. Hand hooping: covers front, side and over head (lasso). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef7xFFD45HQ
